The End of Jobs - Book Review

11/27/2015

The End of Jobs
By: Taylor Pearson

Life Skills: 5 out of 5

Entertaining: 3 out of 5
Picture
When I interviewed Taylor on my podcast, I told him that his book held a place in my top tier of personal favorites. The reason? Multiple times while reading, I had to put the book down and start writing my thoughts down (a similar side effect of reading The Alchemist).

To me, that is the highest degree of impact a book can have. Like Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception, Taylor paints clear pictures that enable powerful realization about the future of the world economy and what that means on an individual level. He then goes on to paint a clear, informative framework for taking advantage of the biggest opportunity of the coming decade.

Consider me completely guilty of drinking the Kool-Aid and enjoying it thoroughly.

Who should read this; Everyone under the age of 35. This is a must read for anyone who has graduated high school in the last 5 years.

Who should skip it; No one.

Interesting tidbit; Taylor edited the Tropical MBA, a top-30 iTunes podcast.

Thankful

I am so grateful for all the amazing things in my life. This past year has been a whirlwind of excitement and I owe a huge debt of gratitude for everyone who has supported me.

The opportunity to host my own podcast has been a liberating, challenging experience and a fantastic catalyst for growth. Many of my guests have become friends and I have learned a tremendous amount from each and every one of them. Here’s a key thing or two I learned from each one.

#1 Lee Ngo - The magic of StartUp Weekend and hurdles that Pittsburgh still has to overcome.
#2 Michael Van Ness - “Mick” has a capacity to give himself in service of others. He makes me reconsider my own actions and whether I am helping others enough.
#3 Larry Gioia - Everyone’s network has room for one more person who give, shares and connects others.
#4 Rob Dulabon - Exercise is not enough. Diet is as, if not more, important than your workouts.
#5 Charlie Eisenhood - Take the long term view. Charlie has not taken a dollar from his media business yet, despite it being 3 years old. He is focused on growth now, knowing the payoff will come later.
#6 David Vatz - No one has to settle for the status quo or what others think the right career path should look like. Do what’s right for you and find your freedom.
#7 Bobby Fry - A voracious appetite
#8 Jason Miller - You are not too busy to start a new project. He launched a fast-growing website while working a full-time job and raising a young child.
#9 Po-Shen Loh - Everyone learns differently, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do it together.
#10 Tad Wissel - Know your roots and don’t compromise your values at the first stiff wind.
#11 Will Lutz - It’s okay to forgo work-life balance to follow your dreams.
#12 Scott Rogerson - When you get knocked down, dust yourself off and keep moving. You never know where your next opportunity will arise from.
#13 Victor Jimenez - You taught me about incorporating a successful podcast into a business and how to improve the production quality of my show.

#14 David Hogan - Respecting your opponent allows you to enter competitions prepared and potentially steal their strengths.
#15 Ian Neumaier - We are not limited to workout routines and running on a track. Through games and play, we can stay in shape and actually have fun.
#16 Zach Malone - People are more important than numbers.
#17 Isaac Saul - Great pieces of writing can be completed in a few hours or over the course of many months.
#18 Melissa Witmer - Pursuing your interests can grow into a sustainable business even if that’s not the plan when you get started.
#19 Ken Kaminski - Don’t willingly cede power to those you don’t know and trust.
#20 - Monologues are harder and easier than you think.
#21 Josh Lucas - Coding is going to be the key skill for folks who want to remain/become employable.
#22 Qxhna Titcomb - Go build something to solve the problem you see. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Also, people rally around someone with passion.
#23 Nathan Chan - Give first. Generosity creates leverage and will lead to a vibrant and powerful network of allies.
#24 Michael Batnick - A voracious reading appetite is a valuable trait to cultivate.
#25 Evan Lepler - It’s very hard to predict the future. Hard work and diligence increase the likelihood of success and stimulation.
#26 Josie Cellone - Your problem is likely someone else’s problem too. If you can figure out a solution, good things will happen.
#27 Henry Thorne - You’ll never be satisfied with your skills and accomplishments. That’s okay. Keep plugging away.
#28 Emily Levenson & Kate Stolzfus - Your partner doesn’t need to be your best friend. Having a strong relationship that is primarily work-focused allows you to maintain more of a work-life balance.

#29 Erik Kulick - Mentality and mindset trumps all. You cannot survive in a high stakes situation if you can’t manage your nerves and stay focused.
#30 Mark Harris - Smaller, nimble organizations can move quicker and provide better service, allowing them to steal business from bigger firms.
#31 Alan Charness - Exceptional planning and discipline yields rewards that few defy imagination.
#32 Jeff Snader - Selling isn’t exclusively about the numbers, the cool factor plays a huge role.
#33 Scott Wolovich - Tech isn’t the only space where startups can exist or thrive. We can’t forget the role of community in culture when we chart the future.
#34 John Craig - Take time to notice the things that go unnoticed.
#35 Barry Ritholtz - Never accept a first offer. Negotiate for deal that satisfies your needs.
#36 Sophia Berman - There are so many impactful and innovative products yet to be created. The only limits are your creativity and willingness to put in the work.
#37 Jennifer Pharr Davis - Build a life around what you love. Take pride in what you accomplish regardless of whether or not others recognize it.
#38 Dan McCoy - Hardships and obstacles will define you and force you to grow. Fear nothing and dream big.
#39 Tim DeByl - Hard work, day in and day out, breeds impressive results.
#40 Bobby Zappala - Throwing a great party can turn into running a great business. Connections are everything.
#41 Sean McComb - Humility is key. Remain humble throughout your journey through life.
#42 Matt Zieger - You can affect change from the bottom-up or the top-down. And top-down may not be the best way.
#43 Dick Zhang - Today is the day to start actively pursuing your dreams.
#44 Chris Johnson - Constraints and limitations inspire creativity and innovation.

I cannot wait to learn even more from my future guests.

P.S. - Thank you again to everyone who contributed to my Kickstarter campaign.

I am putting together strategies for 2016 and I am looking for some feedback from listeners of my podcast. The survey I have linked takes less than 3 minutes and would help me immensely. The first five responders will get mailed one of my favorite books.
